The best time to sail the Grenadines: winds, weather & season guide
If you're planning a Grenadines sailing holiday, the season you pick shapes almost everything — how much wind you'll carry, how busy the anchorages will be, and how much you'll pay. Here's how we think about it after twenty-plus seasons on the water in St Vincent & The Grenadines.
**The dry season: December to May.** This is the classic Caribbean sailing window. Trade winds blow steadily from the east-northeast, humidity drops, showers are brief and passing, and the sea state settles into the long, ordered swell that makes reaching between the islands so enjoyable. Sea temperature holds around 27°C the whole way through.
**The Christmas Winds: mid-December to late February.** The strongest and most reliable trades of the year — commonly 18 to 25 knots, occasionally more. Big-catamaran passages between Bequia, Mustique and the Tobago Cays are fast and exhilarating. It's also the peak booking season: Christmas, New Year and February half-term book out six to nine months ahead, and rates are at their highest.
**March to May: the shoulder-of-peak sweet spot.** In our view this is the best all-round window. The Christmas rush is over, winds ease to a comfortable 15–18 knots, mornings are calm enough for paddleboards and drone flights, and the islands feel unhurried. Water clarity in the Tobago Cays is often at its best.
**June and early July: the value shoulder season.** Winds soften to 10–15 knots, showers pick up but rarely last, and rates drop meaningfully. Hurricane season officially opens on 1 June, but the historical track record shows very few storms reaching the southern Caribbean before August — this is a genuinely good time to sail if you're flexible.
**Late July through October: low season.** Warmer, wetter, and lighter winds mean this window is best avoided for a first-time charter. Most of our fleet is hauled out for annual refit during September and October.
**November: the season restarts.** Trades rebuild through the month, the islands come alive again for the new season, and rates are still shoulder-priced. A quietly excellent time to visit if you want the December weather without the December crowds.
**Practical advice.** For steady reaching and predictable weather, aim for late January through April. For big-breeze passage-making, go over Christmas and book early. For value and quiet anchorages, look at June or November. Whatever you choose, we'll match the yacht and itinerary to the conditions you'll actually meet — get in touch and we'll plan it with you.
