What to Pack for a Grenadines Yacht Charter: An Expert Guide

Preparing for a charter in St Vincent and the Grenadines is mostly an exercise in editing down. We have seen guests arrive with oversized hard suitcases that overwhelm cabin storage, only to spend the entire week living in swimwear and light linen. Life in the islands is relaxed, and packing light ensures your yacht remains clutter-free and comfortable.

Essential luggage and clothing

Soft-sided luggage is non-negotiable. Hard-shell cases cannot be folded or stowed away in yacht lockers and will take up valuable floor space in your cabin. Opt for duffels or collapsible holdalls that can be tucked into a wardrobe once unpacked. For clothing, lightweight and breathable fabrics such as linen and quick-drying cotton work best in the trade winds. Pack several swimsuits, a UV rash vest for snorkeling over the horseshoe reef in the Tobago Cays, and a light layer or windbreaker for breezier evenings under sail.

Footwear on board follows simple yachting etiquette: bare feet or clean, non-marking deck shoes while on the boat. A pair of flip-flops or sandals is ideal for dinghy runs to the beach at Salt Whistle Bay or dinner at Basil's Bar in Mustique. If you plan to explore rocky shorelines or hike between bays on Union Island or Bequia, consider packing sturdy water shoes or trainers.

Sun protection, toiletries, and documents

Reef-safe sun protection is vital for safeguarding our fragile marine ecosystems. The waters of the Tobago Cays Marine Park and Admiralty Bay are home to diverse coral and marine life that are easily harmed by chemical sunscreens containing oxybenzone or octinoxate. Choose mineral-based, reef-safe lotions, along with polarised sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat with a chin strap, and a good insect repellent for time ashore in the evenings.

Essential paperwork should be kept together in a waterproof pouch. You will need valid passports with at least six months' validity for clearance through customs and immigration, any required visas, travel insurance documentation, and your charter contracts. For those chartering bareboat, bring physical copies of your skipper's certification, VHF licence, and sailing CV.

What to leave at home

You can leave most household items behind, as our yachts come fully equipped for comfortable living. Bed linens, bath towels, and well-appointed galleys are provided as standard, and many yachts include snorkeling gear and beach towels. Through SIPS, our provisioning service run by SVG Yacht Services, your food, drinks, and galley essentials can be pre-ordered and delivered directly to your yacht before you slip lines. If you can, leave behind heavy denim, excessive formal wear, expensive jewelery, and standard hair styling tools, as marine electrical systems are best suited to simpler routines.
